In a 2019 study by Sherman, et. Al., it was reported that the health sectors of the United States, Australia, England, and Canada emit a combined 748 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents annually. If these countries’ health sectors were an independent nation, they would rank seventh in the world for GHG emissions! In this presentation Sydney will discuss various sustainability strategies and overcoming the implementation of the strategies within a healthcare setting. Sydney will talk through strategies for new design and construction, renovations, and existing facilities. Given how inherently energy-intensive healthcare is as a sector, Mike will showcase strategies throughout the building lifecycle that reduce dependence on energy and fossil fuels. The team will also showcase best practices and case studies beyond Virginia where healthcare facilities have embraced sustainability and energy conservation.
Learning Objectives: • Understand sustainability through the lens of healthcare and the benefits of green practices in the medical industry. • Discuss the opportunities for increasing sustainable healthcare practices across building lifecycle ranging from building design, facility operations, and equipment efficiencies. • Review case studies of healthcare facilities across the U.S. that are leading the way in addressing the links between environmental and human health.
