Hospitals and other essential facilities are required by building code to remain operational following seismic events and other environmental hazards. While structural systems are designed to protect life safety, the continued operation of a hospital often depends on the performance of nonstructural systems such as mechanical equipment, piping, electrical distribution, and architectural components.

This session provides an overview of the International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE 7 requirements governing the design, anchorage, and certification of nonstructural systems in healthcare facilities. Attendees will learn how risk categories, importance factors, seismic design categories, and wind loading influence system design and installation requirements. Practical examples will be discussed to help engineers and designers understand how these code requirements are implemented on healthcare projects and coordinated across the design and construction team.
