Next-generation smart building technology provides building owners with valuable insight into the use and enjoyment of the building space itself, enhancing building management, improving operational and clinical functions, and saving money. Smart buildings leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to connect wireless sensor
networks that can monitor real time data.

Kahler Slater’s architects collaborate with engineers to incorporate numerous technologies into building designs as they become network-capable. Examples of smart-enabled systems include HVAC, lighting, temperature sensing, window shading, security, audio-visual systems, and health monitoring. All of these systems have the ability to reside on a building’s network and provide endless analytics, giving the building owner the ability to customize and manage their smart building. The goal is to deliver a design that is fully integrated to work seamlessly and provide training and documented operating procedures for the proper system management, allowing owners to harvest the data that helps them arrive at the best decisions for them.

Learning Objectives:
1. Summarize what a solid standard will provide to the facility. The standard would be used from design to operations. This makes expectations clear for all that have line of sight to fire, smoke, and acoustical barriers.
2. Define why passive fire protection is such a critical component to life safety and code compliance. We will dive into the differences between the multiple constructions processes used for building of rated barriers.
3. Preconstruction risk assessments are component to a solid life safety compliance process for the fire and smoke barriers in a facility. This presentation will discuss a roadmap to achieve compliance. The PCRA should start with the design and engineering phase and should include risk management, owners’ rep, project superintendents, and actual installer or constructor. By communication internally about potential issues that could arise and affect patient safety. We will discuss typical firestop applications that should be addressed ahead of the project such as, sustainable cable penetrations, dynamic head of wall joints, water intrusion areas and architectural specification and design.
4. Identify tools, best practices, and procedures to achieve compliance in fire, smoke and acoustical assemblies during all building life cycle phases. These tools will provide a true submittal of tested assemblies that best meet the facilities needs long term.
